DUTIES                                     :         · Provide administrative and logistical support to the   Directorate and for Council Members · Monitor and evaluate expenditure of conditional grant for public libraries in the provinces · Administer the process of reconstitution of National Council for Library and Information Services and the Legal Deposit Committee · Develop and monitor database for public libraries · Ensure compliance with the acts such as Legal Deposit act, National Library of SA act, South African Library for the Blind, and National Council for Library and Information Services act.

 

POST                                       :           Audio Visual Archivist: Sound Preservation

 

SALARY                                  :            R170 799 per annum (Level 7)

REQUIREMENTS                                 · 3 year Degree/ National Diploma in Sound or Audio Engineering or ICT or equivalent qualification with a working knowledge of sound and related audio-visual formats · Relevant experience preferable in digital sound restoration, general historical events pertaining to South Africa and a working knowledge on South African Music and recording history · Knowledge of the Historical events and South African recording history · Basic repair of sound recordings · Basic preservation rules for sound recordings etc, · Sound equipment (clean, operate, etc) · Climatic conditions of storage and vaults · Different types of formats of sound recordings and recognise them · Digital restoration of sound recordings · Databases and Data coding/cataloguing of audio-visual material · Digitisation of audio-visual material · Understanding mass digital asset management systems.

 

DUTIES                                     :         · Evaluation of all sound formats for production of technical records · Do appraisal and accessioning of all sound formats, · Care, repair and restoration of sound recordings, · Quality control of duplications and returned material · Arrange for delivery and return of all sound material to the laboratories, · Preparation of sound material for access at client services section, · Operation of different types of equipment to access material, · Maintenance of Vaults and Storerooms, · Select material from donations for preservation, · Sorting, marking off, written acknowledgement, attending and storing of sound recordings received, · Providing source codes to new material groups, · Assist with compiling a list of the contents of each sound vault, · Checking accuracy of lists · The sorting, packaging and marking and storing of donations, · The describing and indexing of information regarding the donation, · Keeping and updating of a register of donated and received material, · Sorting, arrangement, description and storing of new items, · Stocktaking , numbering, stamping, indexing and data coding of new and backlogged items, · Writing of thank you letters, · Preservation measures  re collections, · Supply information on the collections for the website and client services and outreach units, · Compile reports weekly, monthly and annually on all aspects of the collection and preservation thereof, · Identify hiatuses in the collection, · Source and operate relevant equipment for the long term preservation of the material · Select material for digitization programmes, · Do digital restoration of recordings for preservation in Mass Digital Asset Management Systems

REQUIREMENTS                                 · 3 year Degree/ National Diploma in Film or Information Management or equivalent qualification with a working knowledge of the preservation of film and video and related audio-visual formats, · Relevant experience preferable in cinematographic film work, general historical events pertaining to South Africa and a working knowledge on South African film history.

POST                                       :           Archivist: Book Conservator

REQUIREMENTS                                 ·  A National Diploma in Bookbinding or equivalent. · At least three years applicable experience in a related environment. · Knowledge and experience in general preservation practices. · Computer literacy. · Good communication skills. · Good interpersonal skills. · Good organizing skills. · Ability to be innovative. · Ability to work under pressure.

 

 

DUTIES                                    :          · Perform conservation repairs and treatment to all bound archival records and books · Carry out specialised conservation repairs to rare and highly valuable bound archival records · Investigate, develop and implement conservation treatment strategies for all bound records · Participate in all efforts to improve preservation management and practices at the National Archives · Develop proper protective enclosures for all rare archival records · Test all material purchased for the preservation of archival records · Provide the technical expertise required in displaying all bound material · Participate in upgrading and modernising the Conser­vation Workshop · Identify equipment and material requirements to carry out conservation treatments and repairs · Investigate and develop ways in reducing conservation cost without compromising quality · Provide statistics for reporting purposes · Assist with training programs in conservation developed by the National Archives · Assist with the institution-wide preservation planning · Participate on the development and management of the Disaster Plan · Participate in the development of the Preservation Policy.

 

POST                                       :           Archivist: Records Management (x2)

REQUIREMENTS                                 · A recognised three-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification with an appropriate major subject, such as History, Public Administration or Information Management · A relevant post-graduate qualification, such as Archival Studies, would be a recommendation · One year working experience in the National Archives Repository or Information Systems · Proven research aptitude and knowledge of research methodologies · Proven aptitude for conceptual and analytical thinking coupled with detail orientation · Good communication (both verbal and writing) and interpersonal skills essential.
